Balcony Planter Setup Guide: Elevate Your Space with Handmade Cedar

Nothing transforms a balcony into a lush retreat quite like a thoughtfully designed planter filled with vibrant greenery. At Kelowna Woodcraft, our luxury handmade cedar planters make it easy to bring that vision to life—combining craftsmanship, sustainability, and the timeless appeal of natural wood.

Below is a step‑by‑step guide to setting up your own balcony planter, featuring our locally crafted cedar planter box.

Why Choose a Cedar Planter?

Locally sourced & sustainable: We craft every planter from premium British Columbia cedar, supporting local mills and reducing transportation emissions.

Luxury craftsmanship: Each piece is handmade in our Kelowna workshop, reflecting over 40 years of woodworking expertise.

Durability & beauty: Cedar’s natural oils make it rot‑resistant, perfect for year‑round outdoor use.

Choosing locally made products means you’re investing in quality and supporting skilled Canadian craftsmanship.

Step‑by‑Step: Setting Up Your Balcony Planter

1. Unbox your cedar planter

Carefully remove your Kelowna Woodcraft Balcony Planter from its packaging. Notice the distinct cedar aroma? Your plants will too, and its natural scent is pest repellent!

2. Choose your placement

Select a spot on your balcony that receives adequate sunlight for your chosen plants. Secure the planter to your railing with the provided heavy‑duty straps.

3. Attach your garden liner

Line the inside with a quality garden liner and staple it in place. This improves drainage and prolongs the life of your planter. If you are using your own liner, You will want to cut a section of liner approximately the surface area of inside the planter box. So for this planter I cut a square of liner 36" long by 34" wide. Then I placed it into the planter and stapled the top edges in place near the brim of the planter box. Don't worry about overdoing it with the staples, a securely fit liner will extend the life of your balcony planter.

4. Add soil

Fill the planter halfway with nutrient‑rich potting soil. A good mix ensures your plants have the drainage and nutrients they need. If you have bonemeal on hand, its a great idea to sprinkle a little into the mix.

5. Arrange and plant

Now arrange your plants how you would like them to rest in your garden box. Ensure that each plant is spaced out evenly and not crowding each other. Ideally the top of roots will level with the brim of the planter.

Gently remove plants from their nursery pots, rough up the root ball to encourage healthy root spread. Afterall, these plants have been couped up in their nursery pots since seedlings, so its a good idea to help them stretch their legs a little before placing them into their new home.

6. Top off with soil and water generously

Fill the remaining space with soil, press down lightly. Ensure that the top of the roots of all plants are level with the edge of the planter. Create soil bowls around the root stems and water thoroughly. Stand back and enjoy your elevated, handcrafted balcony garden!
