Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

What materials are the bat boxes made out of?

We use FSC certified Western Red Cedar for all of our bird feeders. Cedar is nontoxic, has beautiful natural colors and grain, as well as a wonderful aroma. It thrives in damp climates, withstands many conditions, resists rot, and does not shrink, swell, warp, or decay in weather changes. Cedar allows our planters to last all four seasons in any climate. Cedar is a natural insect repellent, protecting your garden from unwanted critters.

Where should I mount my bat box?

Mount your bat box at least 4 meters (approximately 13 feet) above the ground on a building or tree, ensuring it's in a location that receives ample sunlight, preferably facing south or southeast. Placing the box near hedgerows or tree lines can aid bats in locating it, as they use these features for navigation. Avoid areas with artificial lighting and ensure the box is sheltered from strong winds.

When is the best time to install a bat box?

While bat boxes can be installed year-round, late winter or early spring is ideal. This timing allows bats to discover the new habitat as they return from hibernation.

How can I attract bats to my bat box?

Mount High and Sunny: south or southeast to catch at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight each day. Avoid placing it on trees, as these tend to stay cooler and attract predators.

Choose a good Location: Place the box near a water source, such as a pond or stream, which attracts bats to hunt. Also, ensure there are open flight paths for easy access to the box. Bats prefer clear, unobstructed areas.

Provide bat friendly environment: Encourage insect populations by avoiding pesticides and planting night-blooming flowers or native plants that attract moths and other insects. These are essential food sources for bats.

Be Patient: It can take time for bats to discover and occupy a new bat box. Some bats may scout your box in the fall but not return until the following spring, so keep it in place year-round.

For more detailed tips on attracting bats, visit sources like Bat Conservation International or the National Wildlife Federation.

Why would I want a bat box?

Installing a bat box offers several benefits:

Natural Pest Control: Bats are voracious insect-eaters, consuming large quantities of mosquitoes, moths, and other pests, reducing the need for chemical insecticides.

Pollination and Seed Dispersal: Some bat species contribute to pollinating plants and dispersing seeds, aiding in plant reproduction and forest regeneration.

Biodiversity Support: Providing roosting sites helps conserve bat populations, many of which are declining due to habitat loss.

By installing a bat box, you support local wildlife and promote a balanced and healthy ecosystem in your backyard.

Aren't bats Dangerous?

Bats are generally harmless and play a vital role in ecosystems by controlling insect populations. However, like many wild mammals, some bats can carry rabies, a serious disease transmissible to humans and pets. The incidence is low, with less than 1% of bats infected, but it's essential to avoid direct contact. If you encounter a bat, do not touch it. In case of potential exposure, wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and water and seek medical advice promptly.

Is it safe to have bats near my home?

Yes, bats are beneficial creatures that help control insect populations. However, it's essential to avoid handling them directly, as some may carry diseases. Always use protective measures if close contact is necessary.

Do I need to clean my Bat box?

There is no need to clean or remove the bat box once installed. Visually Inspect the box annually for signs of wear or damage, and ensure it remains securely mounted. It's best to perform maintenance during the winter months when bats are less likely to be present. Always use protective measures, such as gloves, during inspections to avoid direct contact with any residing bats

Is assembly easy?

All of our bat boxes come pre-assembled ready for inhabitants straight out the box.
